at Syracuse University Library
Dedicated 9 June 1998

News:

Syracuse, 24 June 2000: The Ed Stabler Syracuse Chargers National Distance Running Collection and TrackMeets.com have reached an agreement by which TrackMeets.com will host the online streaming video archives of the Collection.

Syracuse, 15 June 1999: The Trustees of the Ed Stabler Syracuse Chargers National Distance Running Collection at Syracuse University Library have approved the creation of an endowment to ensure the availability of the Collection to future generations. The target of $50,000 will ensure ongoing acquisitions of running periodicals and monographs, and establishing a visiting scholarship. Contributions to the endowment, payable to Syracuse University, may be sent to Dr Kamal Jabbour, 121 Link Hall, Syracuse University, Syracuse NY 13244-1240.

The Ed Stabler Syracuse Chargers Running Collection at Syracuse University Library was created by the Syracuse Chargers Track Club and Syracuse University, to honor Engineering Professor Emeritus Ed Stabler for 35 years of academic service and for outstanding achievement in long distance running.

The running collection resides in Bird Library at Syracuse University. It is open to the public and is accessible through Inter-Library Loan.

The mission of the Collection is to preserve the rich heritage of distance running through the stories of runners and races. The Collection features the world's largest public collection of biographies and publications of historical significance to distance running.

The original announcement of the Running Collection appeared in the 22 December 1997 issue of The Syracuse Post-Standard. The Running Collection was dedicated on 9 June 1998. Ed Stabler graciously accepted the honor, surrounded by family and friends from Syracuse University and the Central New York running community.

On 11 July 1998, the Ed Stabler Syracuse Chargers Running Collection was officially designated as the National Distance Running Hall of Fame Library. Dr Kamal Jabbour, trustee of the Collection, made the announcement during the inaugural induction ceremony of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame, held at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. Renamed the Ed Stabler Syracuse Chargers National Distance Running Collection, the main collection remains at Syracuse University's Bird Library at 222 Waverly Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13244. A reference center is also housed in the Hall of Fame at 114 Genesee St in Utica, NY 13502, for the perusal of Hall visitors.

Runners and researchers are welcome to visit Syracuse and use the resources of Collection. A special grant is planned to cover the cost of travel and accommodation in Syracuse. Contact Dr Kamal Jabbour at (315)443-3000 or email jabbour@syr.edu for details.
